Ubisoft Announce Ghost Recon Frontline
Early this morning Ubisoft announced Ghost Recon Frontline, the newest entry into the tactical shooter franchise that takes players in a new but at the same time familiar direction. Ghost Recon Frontline is developed by Ubisoft Bucharest.
Frontline is a large-scale player versus player shooter that carries the legacy of previous Ghost Recon titles and implements it in a first-person shooter multiplayer experience. The standard gameplay mode in Frontline is Expedition, which throws 100 players against each other in teams of three-person squads whose objective is to find crucial intel and extract it from the map all while contending the other 97 players in their own squads to doing the same thing.
Frontline takes the action to a fictional island called Drakemoor, which has been described as being just 4×4 km in size, featuring four distinct biomes and 20 unique landmarks.
Ubisoft noted that the key to player success in Frontline is putting together and developing your team of “Contractors”, which is the name of the players’ soldiers in Frontline.
From the beginning of the game, players will start with two Contractors but are able to hire new ones, evolve their capabilities and customise them. Contractors are based on classes and, so far, only three have been confirmed.
Classes are specialised to fill in specific roles, and Ubisoft believes that through this the tactical nature of Ghost Recon will come through for players to experience. These classes are as follows:
Assault Class – Assault Class functions as you’d expect in any Ghost Recon title serving as the foot soldier of the team, choosing to take on the enemy up close and capitalise on opportunities.
Scout Class – Scout Class functions as your long-range aggressor, they can pick off targets at long range and boost the team to make support items available faster.
Support Class – Support Class functions as your base builder, able to lay down traps or supports in order to fortify positions on the map.
Ubisoft noted that one of the key gameplay considerations they hope to separate Frontline from titles like Fortnite, Warzone and other Battle Royale games is the ability to change the battlefield. Players will be able to earn equipment, gadgets and weapons whilst playing, however, specific items like turrets and sniper towers can also be dropped onto the battlefield.
Frontline will have other modes available, one such mode catering to a more casual style of play that is akin to the classic arena-shooters gamers currently enjoy. Ubisoft has stated that it plans on rolling out new modes on a seasonal rotation.
Frontline looks to be a very different Ghost Recon experience, especially as this is a first-person shooter, where Ghost Recon titles have almost always been enjoyed in a third-person perspective. According to Ubisoft the shift to first-person was to “enhance the immersion for players and make them feel like they were on the field.”
It’s too early to tell if players will jump into another Battle Royale title, or if this is going to be a success for the Ghost Recon series after the lukewarm reception of Breakpoint a couple of years ago. Playtests have begun in select countries in Europe and no further updates have been provided on when the title will launch or when further playtests will be available.
One More Game will keep you up to date as that information comes to light.
