OMG Game of the Year 2021 – Best Story, DLC and Adventure

Over the next 12 days, we, (the OMG crew) are announcing our games of the year for 2021 in  32 categories. These games have been nominated, categorised, and discussed by those behind the scenes here. We do acknowledge that not everyone’s favourite 2021 games are on our lists, as unfortunately we are not able to play and review every game that comes to console.

Up today is Best Story, DLC and Adventure title for 2021.

Best Story

These games have great narratives

Winner – Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

Unfortunately no review of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, but over half the team have played through it since launch.

Honourable Mention – Psychonauts 2

Psychonauts 2 is a very unique game with a fantastic story and enjoyable, albeit quite easy gameplay. It is just fun to jump in and explore the crazy world and because of its beauty it really seduces players in to searching every nook and cranny in search off all those upgrades. Even with some of its pacing issues it does not grow tiring at any point and even without playing its predecessor, this Is definitely one to pick up and play. 8/10 – reviewer by Brando, review found here.

Honourable Mention – It Takes Two

Best DLC

These games had great extra down loadable content post launch in 2021

Winner – Ghost of Tsushima Island

While we did not review the Iki Island DLC for Ghost of Tsushima, our glowing 10/10 review of the main game can be found here.

Honourable Mention – DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part Two

The Ancient Gods Part Two is a fitting end to a great story. The game delivers a full package that culminated in an ending reminiscent of another favourite title of mine. The improvements and additions made to this expansion by id Software added other aspects to the game that have kept the player thinking on their feet. The final boss battle may have left myself a little bit frustrated, but driven to complete this final chapter. The Ancient Gods Part 2 is well worth jumping into if you enjoyed the main game or The Ancient Gods Part 1. If you haven’t played either then you may want to jump into the main game first. 8/10 -Reviewed by Xbox Gamer Dad Matt, review found here.

Honourable Mention – World War Z Aftermath

Saber Interactive are continuing to back World War Z and Aftermath is great for those who want more World War Z or want to jump into it for the first time. While the first-person perspective is not perfect, it is a great new addition and some players will not go back to the third-person view. The 2 (3 for some) new story episodes are some of the best episodes with Russia’s Kamchatka being a standout with its uniqueness. While players are still waiting for next-gen enhancements and the Horde XL, the depth with progression and difficulty will keep players active until the updates drop. World War Z Aftermath still provides some of the finest, panicky and anxious cooperative multiplayer moments, making it perfect for gaming sessions with mates. 8/10 – Reviewed by Pottsy, review found here.

Adventure

These games must fit into the Adventure genre.

Winner – It Takes Two

Unfortunately no review of It Takes Two, but we have all sunk our teeth into it, especially once it hit Game Pass.

Honourable Mention – The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes

The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes by Supermassive Games is one of the best story driven games of this generation and the best in the Anthology so far. With an engrossing story that doesn’t let up and has two different cuts to play, House of Ashes delivers a wonderful experience. The secrets are meaningful with depth to the lore and backstory. The characters are likeable and the relationships effective and have so much detail behind them. In the two available playthroughs, the investment to detail is apparent in both and made us want to play more to see every possible ending. This is an intense popcorn movie that the player will not want to end. 9/10 – Reviewed by Rob, review found here.

Honourable Mention – The Medium

The Medium is a fantastic achievement of storytelling and gameplay mechanics mixed with incredible art and sound.  Bloober Team have given the gaming community a masterpiece that needs to be experienced by anyone that calls themselves a gamer.  The sheer vastness of the story mixed with gameplay that is smooth and responsive keeps the player on the edge of their seat for the duration of the eight-hour story and delivers on all fronts. The immersive nature of the sights and sounds really put the player at the centre of this experience.  Bloober Team have taken full advantage of the new generation hardware and the power of the Xbox Series X really makes this game shine. The Medium is a joy to experience on new-gen hardware from both a performance and graphical fidelity perspective.  Well done Bloober Team on this fantastic new split screen masterpiece. 10/10 – Reviewed by Rob, review found here.
