OMG Game of the Year 2021 – RPG, Multiplayer and Most Disappointing

Over the next 12 days, we, (the OMG crew) are announcing our games of the year for 2021 in  32 categories. These games have been nominated, categorised, and discussed by those behind the scenes here. We do acknowledge that not everyone’s favourite 2021 games are on our lists, as unfortunately we are not able to play and review every game that comes to console.

Up today is best game for RPG, Multiplayer and Most Disappointing for 2021.

Best RPG

These games fit into the Role Playing Game genre.

Winner – Disco Elysium – The Final Cut

Unfortunately there was no review from the OMG crew for Disco Elysium.

Honourable Mention – Tales of Arise

Honourable Mention – Cris Tales

Cris Tales is a testament to the skills of those at Colombian indie game studios Dreams Uncorporated and Syck to have a game that draws players in with a strong story with homage paid to the Colombian culture and heritage that just adds so much to Cris Tales. A story, characters, and a beautifully constructed world with cartoon-anime-like graphics all work well together to draw in the player which makes Cris Tales a game that is worth investing the time required to truly experience the best that this game has to offer to the player. 9/10 – Reviewed by Rob, review found here.

Best Multiplayer

These games fit into the Multiplayer genre.

Winner – Halo Infinite

Halo Infinite’s free multiplayer experience comes to gamers at a time where many have been looking for their next venture into the Halo universe and while it’s not the campaign that many are waiting for, there is a lot of Halo related fun to be had. The game brings some amazing and well designs maps and the new additions to the game fit right in like they’ve always been there. There are some tweaks that are required to make this game the best it can be, but as this game comes to players pre-launch in beta form, I have no doubt that improvements will come, and if the Master Chief Collection is anything to go by, these will continue for years to come. If you haven’t downloaded this one yet, then you really should give it a go. Now bring on the campaign.

Unfortunately our in-depth Halo Infinite campaign review is on going, but you can find our multiplayer review here.

Honourable Mention – Back 4 Blood

Back 4 Blood is the spiritual successor that many Left 4 Dead fans have been waiting for. This 8 to 10-hour campaign is a cooperative experience that takes players through a number of apocalyptic survival scenarios that will test anyone trying to go it alone or a group on the brutal higher difficulties. Back 4 Blood offers a great setting and a decent game that is worth experiencing at least once and the longevity is in the difficulty and the perk system allowing each player to play their own way. The downfall for this title is the lack of progression between solo and cooperative modes and some of its technical issues, but with Turtle Rock flagging this, it means changes are coming soon. If you haven’t considered picking this one up then you may want to change your mind, grab some friends and survive the hordes of Ridden together. 9/10 – Review by Xbox Gamer Dad Matt, review found here.

Honourable Mention – Forza Horizon 5

Forza Horizon 5 is a racing game lover’s dream, with beautiful cars, improved graphics, sounds and customisation options surrounded by the beauty that is Mexico means that this keep up PlayGround games high standards and is arguably the best Forza Horizon games.  There is so much on offer and available for players to choose from that it means hours can just go by as players dive into the largest map in the franchise’s history, there are no shortage of roads to drive on and sights to see as players explore Mexico. Forza Horizon 5 will only continue to get better in time as Playground Games eventually start releasing DLCs that will only add so much more to a world that players will love. 10/10 – Reviewed by J, review found here.

Most Disappointing

These games are generally not bad but had a lot of hype behind their launch and became the most disappointing by letting down for fans and those who played them for various reasons.

Dishonourable Winner – Battlefield 2042

Dishonourable Mention – Biomutant

Biomutant’s brevity of the main story is perfect around the 10-hour mark and allows developer Experiment 101 enough time to tell the story they want to tell without stretching it out unnecessarily and welcoming fatigue or disinterest. Dozens of side quests to complete, tons of secrets to discover and plenty of experimentation with gear and weapons allow players to explore the world of Biomutant with as much depth as they want. The inclusion of the Light and Dark Aura system, as well as how to handle the Tribes simply screams replayability and thorough exploration to get as most out of the world as possible. The fate of the world is in the players hands and the road to that decision is up to them every step of the way. 7/10 – Reviewed by DAYNE, review found here.

Dishonourable Mention – Grand Theft Auto Trilogy – The Definitive Edition
