Best Sound Design
Rules: These are games have soundtracks and game specific sounds that compliment their game.
Cyberpunk 2077 – PS5 and Xbox Series X|S*
Cyberpunk’s story, exceptional side-missions, eccentric NPCs, gunplay and outstanding location has me enthralled and it is one of those titles that I look forward to sitting down to become V to continue my journey with taking on Night City. For our full review in progress, click here.
* Note that our Cyberpunk nominations are for the Series X|S and PS5 versions. We have not reviewed the base console version or currently endorse those versions.
Doom Eternal – PS4, Switch and Xbox One
ID have developed their best DOOM to date, solidifying why the franchise has remained so popular for nearly three decades. It’s bigger, better and bolder in every way. For fans and newcomers alike, DOOM Eternal is an enjoyable, action packed experience that is gruesomely satisfying. For our full review, click here.
Final Fantasy VII Remake – PS4
Fuser – PS4, Switch and Xbox One
Ghost of Tsushima – PS4
Overall Ghost of Tsushima is a masterstroke of art, gameplay and open world exploration. This is a game to be savoured like a fine wine aged to perfection. Do not rush through this, as there is so much to see on this island of Tsushima. The story is perfectly placed and toned throughout as the Samurai who becomes a hero of the island and like Jin, this game is a legend. Sucker Punch should be extremely proud of this PS4 exclusive. This is how you end a generation with a game that hits it for six from every possible angle. Click here for our full review.
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales – PS4|5
Miles Morales is a bright, charismatic A-grade student, who is not only able to step into the shoes of Spider-Man but does it so well that Insomniac have reflected that into this stellar game. Miles and his support characters create a memorable story in a beautiful backdrop. The action and activities will keep players webbed to their screen until credits role, it is just a pity that its shorter run time will keep players wishing it had a longer narrative in Miles’ first independent outing as the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. Star Wars Squadrons – PS4, PSVR and Xbox One
Tetris Effect – Xbox One and Series X|S
Tetris Effect: Connected is a great game for family, fans and anyone looking for something less of “blow things up” to play. It offers a great fun and even better looking experience with a soundtrack to match. It’s a game that Tetris fans, puzzle fans and those looking for something different to enjoy. Those that don’t like Tetris may need to look elsewhere. This is Tetris at its finest. Click here for our full review.
The Dark Pictures: Little Hope – PS4 and Xbox One
Little Hope expands upon what Supermassive Games tried to do with Man of Medan and largely succeeds. The six to seven hour narrative allows for some deep thinking about what is happening and what may occur later. While secrets and quick time event play is still crucial to making the correct choices they have allowed for special traits for each character to be unlocked which are imperative at the end. Combine this with great storytelling and an excellent ending with twists and turns along the way and we have a fantastic second entry into the Dark Pictures Anthology. Click here for our full review.
The Last of Us Part 2 – PS4
The Last of Us: Part II is brutal, violent, confronting and at times just outright depressing. The world that has been established is in a league of its own, brought to life by characters and performances that are phenomenal, engaging and genuinely interesting. Such an emotionally driven, highly cinematic and interactive experience is a once in a generation feat to pull off but it is one that Naughty Dog have masterfully accomplished.
