Battletoads – Xbox One

The Battletoads have been in the shadows for 26 years and this game knows it has some expectations and nostalgia to fill.  This sequel is a great addition to the Xbox exclusive library. Newcomers will be happy with the accessibility while veterans of the series have the option to be punished. The action is tight; the change in gameplay predominantly keeps it fresh, while the animations, cutscenes, art style and sound design oozes fun and style, you just wish there was a lot more of it. The toads are back and after this long wait, it is great to see they are ready for the battle once again.  Click here for our full review.

Demon’s Souls – PS5

Demon’s Souls is a game that tests the most patient of gamers and stays true to its origin. The world and the characters in it, though harrowing, are very beautiful to look at and completing the many challenging, but fair tasks in Demon’s Souls is a very rewarding feeling. It is not at all for the faint of heart and I imagine the global death-count is astronomical, although I highly recommend everyone try it, especially fans of the genre. Click here for our full review.

Hades – Nintendo Switch

Hades is a highly addictive title that will have players constantly doing ‘just one more run’. The combat, story, weapon and Boon system are well done and to the point that the escape experiences are never the same twice. It makes time fly by with each run and to the point where two and three o’clock in the morning happened to me often. Hades has impressive different enemy and boss types, which keeps battles fresh. It requires great strategy and sometimes a bit of luck to make it to the far reaches of the final boss. The joy and reward of that first successful escape attempt is so satisfying and makes the 20 to 30 hours played getting there well worth it. Well-done Supergiant games on this masterpiece! Mafia: Definitive Edition – PS4 and Xbox One

Mafia: Definitive Edition is a truly visually stunning story that keeps the player’s focus at all times. With simple gameplay, phenomenal story and a great cast of characters set in a fictional setting with real-world themes, this title has come a long way since its original 2002 release. Hangar 13 has done Publisher 2K proud and I recommend playing this for both newcomers of the series and also those who want to revisit a classic. Click here for our full review.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales – PS4|5

Miles Morales is a bright, charismatic A-grade student, who is not only able to step into the shoes of Spider-Man but does it so well that Insomniac have reflected that into this stellar game. Miles and his support characters create a memorable story in a beautiful backdrop. The action and activities will keep players webbed to their screen until credits role, it is just a pity that its shorter run time will keep players wishing it had a longer narrative in Miles’ first independent outing as the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. Streets of Rage 4 – PS4, Switch and Xbox One

Streets of Rage 4 hits the high notes in every single aspect at being faithful to franchise but it absolutely knocks it out of the park when adding new elements. As a long time BeatEm Up aficionado, I cannot name a single game in its genre that is this close to perfection. Zombie Army 4: Dead War – PS4, Switch and Xbox One

Even though Zombie Army 4 is a continuation of the series, it is a breath of fresh air with its arcade style fun. The updated graphics and presentation are surprisingly good. The satisfying gameplay also makes it easy to pick up and hard to put down. The levelling up, special moves, mods, upgradeable weapons, improved horde mode are all welcomed and significantly drive up the replayability. If you think 3rd person shooters and zombie games have dried up, you would be mistaken. There may be a ridiculous, non in-depth story but if a game looks good, sounds good, offers replayability and most importantly plays well, you can not go wrong picking up Zombie Army 4 Dead War.
